Generally, headache and sore throat are associated with a whole lot of ailments and can be treated accordingly. Elders and youngsters alike are prone to these problems and these are only symptoms of some viral or bacterial infection and can be very uncomfortable and painful. Some common causes that can lead to a headache, sore throat are:
Common Cold: A common cold can cause symptoms like pain, watery eyes, aching body, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion and sneezing as also a running nose.
Sinusitis: An inflammation of the sinus can cause this condition in which the symptoms include headache, loss of sense or smell, sore throat, snoring, sinusitis and can be caused by a bacteria, virus or fungus.
Flu: Being a contagious infection that can affect the throat, lungs and nose, the symptoms are Diaphoresis, Tender Lymph node, shortness of breath, headache, sore throat.
Allergic rhinitis: Headaches and sore throats can also occur if there is allergic rhinitis coupled with wheezing, mouth irritation and high-pitched breath sounds.
H1N1 (swine) influenza: Affecting people worldwide, this recent flu can also cause symptoms of vomiting, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea.
Pharyngitis: Caused due to the inflammation of the pharynx, the symptoms include headache and sore throat, fever, throat irritation, swollen lymph nodes.
Mononucleosis: A viral infection that can cause symptoms like loss of appetite, Diaphoresis, fever, headache and sore throat, pain, swollen lymph glands.
Tonsillitis: An inflammation of the tonsils can lead to this condition and the symptoms include cough, headache, loss of appetite, sore throat, nausea.
Strep Throat: A Streptococcus bacterial infection, the symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, nausea, sore throat, vomiting.
Hand-foot-mouth disease: A viral infection of the throat, the symptoms may include a loss of appetite, Malaise , feet itching, headache, sore throat etc.
Generally, these infections are caused due to some factors like an emotional disturbance or physical strain, tiredness, lack of nutrition in the diet, for smokers, when forced to work in crowded places. It is the nature of these infections that they manifest themselves only one or two days after being contacted from another person through sneezing or coughing or by touching the objects used by a person with this infection. Hence, at the slightest glimpse of these symptoms, remedial measures should be taken (they can be home treatments or consulting a doctor).
Generally, when you have a sore throat and headache, gargling with warm, salty water can greatly help in relieving the congestion. In case of a slight fever, any paracetamol will suffice. Taking lozenges, lime mixed with honey in a teaspoonful of warm water, using garlic oil or raw garlic, turmeric c mixed with warm milk at nights can all relieve the congestion. Frequent inhalations of hot water with eucalyptus or Vicks mixed in them can greatly help. But, it is always advisable to seek the help of a doctor if the symptoms persist for more than a day.
